‘I Still Struggle With Anxiety’ Shawn Mendes Opens Up About Managing His Mental Health

In March, 20-year old singer, Shawn Mendes let the world in on his battle with his mental health. To Shawn, letting the world know about what he had been coping with and talking about it, was one of the best things he’d ever done for himself.

When PEOPLE approached the Canadian singer-songwriter, he didn’t hide anything from the light about his personal battles and this is what he had to say.

“Talking about the problem, putting it out there, was one of the scariest but most important things I’ve ever done. Just doing that helped me the most. I still struggle with it but just remember every day that everyone deals with some level of anxiety or pressure; we’re all in it together.” Shawn told PEOPLE.

The singer, who released popular songs including If I Can’t Have You and In My Blood, said he had battled for long with anxiety and the struggle actually inspired him to write the song In My Blood which earned him a Grammy award nomination. Talking about this hit single, PEOPLE gathered that while growing up, Shawn was a calm, cool kid. His anxiety problem hit him big after he rose to fame with a number of hits including Stitches and Illuminate. His single, In My Blood, was just Shawn’s way of letting people know that anxiety wasn’t in his blood and that he was okay.

He says he is still struggling with the condition but believes he can cope better, especially after talking about it. It is true that we all suffer some kind of anxiety and Shawn’s case is no exception. Shawn says that he relies on his close circles of friends and family back in Toronto to help keep his mind sane. He believes in humility and doesn’t want to let his superstar status get in the way of his interactions and connections with real people, especially in his love life.
