U.S. Women’s National Team Joins Ticker Tape Parade in NYC to Celebrate World Cup Win.
The U.S. women’s national soccer team to celebrate winning of the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup Final through the streets of New York City. The U.S. women’s team joined in with the Ticker Tape parade on Wednesday after successfully taking home America’s fourth World Cup championship thanks to a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands last Sunday.
The parade was held in the city’s Canyon of Heroes and took a route down Broadway from Battery to City Hall where it was concluded with a ceremony held for the players, including Alex Morgan and Rose Lavelle who scored the winning goal in the 69th minute.
At the start of the ceremony, Mayor de Blasio praised the women, saying, “This team has done something never before seen in the history of this country, the greatest, most-decorated soccer team in the history of this country … and what they accomplished was extraordinary.”
As the U.S. women’s team float reached the end of the parade they were met with Good Morning Americas host Robin Roberts who then introduced all the players, welcoming them to the stage before presenting them with keys to the city.
USWNT’s meteoric rise in the tournament this year did not come without controversy off the field, as after team member, Rapinoe, (33) declined to sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ with her teammates before each match to raise awareness about police misconduct and racial injustice in America.
Rapinoe also came to the attention of the president after a video from one of Rapinoe’s interviews emerged in which the player responded to a question with: “I’m not going to the f—ing White House, No, I’m not going to the White House. We’re not going to be invited. I doubt it.” This caused the president to respond on Twitter, saying that he would invite the team if they win or lose.
