Tips On How to Write a Killer and Winning Resume

Joining the workforce by landing a job is not easy. While there are millions of jobs available out there, people still struggle to get their dream jobs. The reason for this is that there is an international pool of talented professionals to compete with to impress future employers. The big question is, how can one gain a competitive advantage over other competitors? The answer to that is by writing a one-page killer resume. In this post, we give you some tips on how you can write a killer resume to increase your chances of getting hired.
Quantify Your Achievements
If you ever received some achievements and recognitions from your past employers, ensure that you highlight and emphasize them in your resume. If possible, try to describe your achievements in quantity or numbers, not just in words. Studies show that numbers provide achievable and tangible success measurements better than words.
For example, if you are an author, indicate how many books or copies you’ve sold in the past. This will give your investors, publishers, or even your employers a general view of how competitive you are. That way, they are more likely to take the risk of being with you because they can estimate how much they are willing to stake depending on your performance background.
Associate Yourself with Big Names
If by any chance you have already collaborated with big names, brands, and influencers before, this is your chance to exhibit them in your resume. Naming them in your resume will give your future employers the impression that you are passionate and committed to your field of expertise. This means that you have the power of authority, reliable, and most of all, credible enough for the big bosses to willingly work with you.
According to Cialdini’s principles of persuasion, people respect authority and would follow their lead. Associating yourself with big names can work as a proof of your capability.
Is the sponsor of your scholarship a big name? Name them! Is your publication featured in any popular media? Highlight this fact. Do not hesitate to put the names on your resume. You won’t believe how much it helps to boost your credibility.
Provide a Description of the Company You Previously Worked With
If you just write down the name of the company you previously worked for, the HR personnel or your employer may not be aware of your previous company as well as their background. That is particularly so if the company is not well-known. Most of the HR personnel will take some extra time to do some research to have some background information. That way, they can determine whether the experience you’ve gained from your previous employer is in-line with the job at hand. Instead of stressing them, why don’t you provide the information to them instead? You don’t need to write a long description, though. We recommend that you go to the About Us page of your company’s website and rephrase the words into one or two lines. This will do.
Use bullet points instead of a huge text block
Unless they are reading a book, most people get easily distracted when reading huge chunks of texts. Therefore, we recommend that you use bullet points because they simplify the content of your resume. Aside from that, it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. As such, the reader will be more encouraged to read your resume and not skip it. Describe your previous responsibilities in about 2 to 3 bullet points.
For Example:
WRONG: – “I worked as the Public Relations Manager at Company ABC during the period X Aug 20XX to X Mar 20XX. I was responsible for handling public correspondences. I was involved in a campaign in collaboration with the …”
CORRECT:– “Public Relations Manager, Company ABC X Aug 20XX – X Mar 20XX
– Handling public correspondences
– Involved in a campaign in collaboration with the …”
